You may not know it but only about 40% of the people waiting for a bone marrow transplant find a donor match. The number is worse for Asian Americans. DNA markers differ between ethnic groups and there are less Asians in the donor database.
13 year Vicky Tran is one of the lucky ones. She suffers from leukemia and a year ago needed a bone marrow transplant. A donor was found fairly easily. Even more remarkable is that they both live in the San Francisco Bay Area!
It’s been a year since the procedure was done. Tran decided to celebrate her one year anniversary by meeting her donor, Vincent Pan. Funny how someone can give you life and you’re complete strangers.
The donation means a bit more to Pan. He has a friend who needs a bone marrow transplant, too. So, he knows exactly how much his donation has meant to one special 13 year old.
